Problems with One R firmware update from android phone

Sorry if I've missed something obvious, but the instructions for doing a firmware update are as follows (at http://onlinemanual.insta360.com/oner/en-us/camera/firmware):

Update via ONE R App:

  1. Connect ONE R to your phone and open the ONE R app on your phone. How do I connect?
  2. When you're due an update, the app will give you an update notice, then hit 'Downlaod'.
  3. After downloading, follow the on-screen instructions to connect to ONE R's again and upload the firmware.
  4. After uploading, ONE R will start updating automatically. The indicator will be solid blue and screen will turn off during the update, and ONE R will restart automatically after the update is complete.
  5. You can check the current firmware version via the turn on animation on the screen of your ONE R.

If I connect to the camera via wifi and try to do the update, it says that I need to switch to a connection with internet access. If I switch to my normal wifi, and try to download the update, it just keeps saying that I need to connect to the internet, and a dialog opens saying 'go to wifi settings'.

How are you supposed to perform this update from your phone? I'm using a Huawei P10 Lite android phone, with app version 1.2.4.

I've also tried connecting to the camera directly from my phone using a USB OTG cable, but even though the camera is connected, as soon as I try to update the firmware, it prompts me to connect to the camera over wifi.

Very, very confused.
