ONE R won't work without activation

Even though I've read and the manual says that this camera will work from the touch screen without activation, this camera will NOT record video without activation. And I can't activate the phone because my phone is too old for the app (which is ridiculous in itself, as my phone is not that old). How do I get this stupid camera to work without activation. None of this was stated in the literature about the phone before purchase. This is a real mess and I am hopping mad!!!

How do I get this to work??
